Performing diversity: l'inizio

Fort-in festival è nato con radici locali e respiro artistico internazionale (Creative Time Summt 2015), nel luglio del 2015 dall'indignazione a seguito di tragici episodi di xenofobia in alcuni quartieri della città metropolitana di Venezia e Treviso all'arrivo di alcuni gruppi di persone provenienti da aree di crisi. Vorremmo poter diffondere nei quartieri periferici della città laboratori e strumenti appartenenti alle arti performative e sceniche, per poter vivere al meglio i rapidi cambiamenti nella composizione della società contemporanea.

Fort-in Diversity has born with local roots and a international artistic breath thanks to the Creative time summit of the July 2015.  We would like to diffuse in the peripheries of the city laboratories of theater and performative arts to provide new tools for facing the rapid changes of the social composition of the contemporary society. At the same time we would like that the mingrants and the refugees hosted could benefit of this laboratories and get involved and bring their voices possibly on the stage of the festival, otherwise by getting known in the different neighborhoods.

Alcune delle fortificazioni venezianele  hanno scoperto nuovi significati relazioni grazie alle associazioni che da vent'anni a questa parte stanno portando avanti volontariamente processi di cura per questi siti, e fresche realtà come Live arts cultures ( working space di arti performative) e Fucina Underground/ Teatro in Folle ( centro di ricerca teatrale), che promuovono attivamente avvenimenti artistici durante tutto l'anno.

Since twenty years ago some activated a process of care for the Venitian Fortresses, and few years ago fresh realities such as  Live arts cultures (performative arts working space) and Fucina underground( centre for theater research), which are actively promoting performative arts and theatre happening throughout the year, the practises of these realities are giving new meaning and are making places in this former military sites

Alcune di queste fortificazioni sono ancora abbandonate, localizzate in luoghi marginali in quartieri dove quest'anno hanno preso luogo episodi di violenza e razzismo. Un'ondata di paura che può essere considerata un fenomeno Europeo. La società civile di Venezia ha lanciato un messaggio mondiale di indignazione verso questi episodi e ha attivato una catena umanitaria per accogliere i rifugiati.

Some of these forgotten former military sites are still abandoned, marginal places,  located in neighbourhoods where also this year tragic episodes of xenophobia and racism have taken place.

This winter at the arrival of a group of refugees hosted in one of the former military site in Lido of Venice, started a rising wave of fears that it can be considered a European phenomenon.

Europe is suffering for the politics of fears. Illegal migrants and refugees mostly from Africa Asia and Middle East, escaping to humanitarian crisis due to war, poverty, persecutions and climate change disasters, with have less than 50 % chance to survive their journey towards Fortress Europe. At this stage how could racism and xenophobia still matter? The civil society of Venice have launched a broad message of indignations towards these episodes and activated aid chains for welcoming the refugees.

Vorremmo cominciare luoghi simbolici come le fortificazioni veneziane, erette in diverse epoche storiche, che sono sempre stati luoghi chiusi simbolo della paura del nemico e dello straniero, per lavorare sulla nostra cultura dell'ospitalità verso le diversità e riflettere sul futuro del nostro patrimonio vivente in un'Europa di rapidi cambiamenti.

We could start from symbolic places  the Venetian fortresses erected in different historical ages that have always been closed public spaces representing outposts of fears of the enemies and strangers, to work on our culture of hospitality towards diversity and reflect on the future of the contemporary cultural heritage in a diverse Europe.

L'arte riguarda la realtà e offre la possibilità di cambiarla. In tal senso cosa possiamo chiedere all'arte di fare? L'arte può aprire un'indagine sulle emozioni e le strutture del comportamento psico-sociale che porta alla creazione del nemico e dello straniero e che sta prevenendo l'apprendimento interculturale. La pratica fisica può esaminare il mondo e il linguaggio, il movimento del corpo, può guidare verso l'analisi di noi, del nostro spazio e dell'attitudine verso gli altri. Le arti performative e il teatro possono produrre l'avvenimento, coinvolgendo un ampio pubblico, producendo spettacoli con il pubblico attivo. La vera sfida è tornare all'essenza dell'umanità e creare l'opportunità per un contatto, la sfida è stupire e nello stupore radicare una memoria che qualcosa di nuovo era appena stato appreso.

Art regards the reality and offer the possibility to change it. Thus, what can we ask art to do?

Art can be a form of open inquiry on the feelings and psycho-sociological structures sustaining behaviour that leads to the creation of the enemy and that are preventing inter-cultural learning practices. The physical practice could examine the word and the language,the movement of the body

it could guide to the analysis of ourselves, of our space, and the attitude towards the others.

The performative arts and theatre can create an happening engage the broad public producing shows with an active spectatorship.The very challenge is to get back to the humanity essence and create the opportunity for a contact,the challenge is to produce a wonder rooting a memory that something new was just learnt.
